Homeopathic medicines do not have random effects. They have very specific
actions. Each unique remedy can only heal one particular presentation
of a disease. We don’t have medicines for ear infections or diarrhea—we
only have the medicine for Susan’s ear infection or Tommy’s
diarrhea. If you have a large family and you have all been sick at the
same time, you might have noticed that each person in your family has
his or her own individual pattern of symptoms, a pattern that often
repeats itself from one cold or flu to another, or even from one disease
to another.
Please bear these
particularities in mind when filling out our questionnaire. Since I
am not able to physically observe and examine your child in my office,
you must give me as precise a description of his or her state as possible.
Since little children cannot usually describe what they feel, you must
try to figure it out yourself by close observation. Do not ascribe your
own symptoms to your child—remember, everyone is unique. True,
your children may experience illness in the same way as you do (after
all, they have half of your genes) but they may also feel something
completely different. So, try to be objective. Collect the information,
translate it into adult language, but do not interpret it. Do not ask
your children how they felt yesterday or last week—they can only
describe pain and sensations while they experience them.
Since in my prescription
I am relying on the accuracy of your report, you have to give me a vivid
and graphic description of all the important symptoms. I need to know
everything: the colour and texture of a discharge, the way that rash
looks, the unusual smell, the peculiar behaviour. Check if the symptoms
you describe are alleviated or exacerbated by any changes in your child’s
environment, for example, a headache feels much better when outside,
an itch is better when a cold cloth is applied, an earache is eased
by heat, or the overall state is much worse after a bath, a meal, or
a draft of cold air, etc. With pain, it is important to know if a certain
body position, applied pressure, motion, or slight touch decreases or
increases the discomfort.
But don’t
worry: unlike a long-term chronic disease, acute infections are usually
easy to diagnose, because the symptoms are strong and explicit, and
the changes in your child’s condition are quite obvious. Remember,
I am only interested in the manifest changes that occurred just prior
to the onset of your child’s symptoms, not in his or her ordinary
state of health. For example, if your daughter is always very clingy,
it is not a significant finding if she becomes more clingy with fever.
If, however, she suddenly starts to pull away when someone caresses
her, that is a notable change.
Please be to the point—usually four to five sentences of description
are quite enough.

What to expect after the remedy is taken.
Four things can happen after a homeopathic remedy is taken:
1. Fast and permanent resolution of an acute crisis.
2. Fast improvement followed but a relapse of symptoms.
3. Nothing.
4. Symptoms changed or worsened.
What
to do in each case:
1. Kiss your child and get on with your life (but make a note of the
remedy that cured this condition, for any future recurrences).
2. Repeat the same remedy, twice if necessary. If there are more than
three relapses, it’s probably ineffective.
3. Remedy is ineffective.
4. The remedy is not holding and the disease continues its course. A
stronger remedy is needed.
Do not repeat any homeopathic remedy more than four times in a course of a day. Usually, the right remedy does not need to be repeated.
Many serious childhood diseases begin with very similar prodromal symptoms. In the case of a simple head cold, the proper homeopathic medicine will cure the condition in a matter of hours. However, if children are about to develop whooping cough or chicken pox, even the properly prescribed medication will not abort the disease, because the disease must take its course. In this case, the goal of the homeopathic remedy is to reduce the severity of the symptoms and protect your child from any dangerous sequelae.
